In 2014, the Telugu Desam Party's (TDP) N. Chandrababu Naidu clinched power in Andhra Pradesh, securing his third term as Chief Minister by defeating his closest rival, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). This victory was propelled by the 'Modi' wave, as the TDP, in alliance with the BJP and Pawan Kalyan's Jana Sena Party (JSP), rode the wave of Narendra Modi's popularity.
The same coalition that formed in the past has come together again for the upcoming General and Assembly elections. However, this reunion comes after Naidu left the alliance due to disagreements about allocating Special Category Status (SCS). Some view this as opportunistic, mainly driven by the BJP's desire to regain ground in Andhra Pradesh and Naidu's need for a strong ally against Jagan Reddy. But questions remain about the coalition's viability this time.
The path to this reunion had its challenges. In September 2023, Pawan Kalyan announced his alliance with the TDP while Naidu was under judicial remand due to allegations in the Andhra Pradesh Skill Development Corporation scam. The BJP's state leadership openly criticized this move, asserting they were not consulted. It took five months of negotiations before the alliance was finalised. Despite the agreement, dissent brewed among mid and lower-tier BJP leaders, citing Naidu's past criticisms of Modi as a point of contention.
Currently, the primary concern for all three parties is the contentious issue of seat-sharing. The BJP secured approximately six Lok Sabha seats, leaving the TDP with 17 seats and the JSP with only two. The TDP will contest 144 seats in the Assembly, with the BJP vying for ten and the JSP for 21. Despite the TDP's dominant position with a 40 per cent vote share, notable names were conspicuously absent from its list of candidates, raising eyebrows within the party and beyond.
As the elections draw nearer, Naidu finds himself embroiled in internal strife within the TDP, while the JSP, which abstained from the 2014 elections, grapples with its diminished electoral presence after the 2019 polls. Meanwhile, the BJP faces dwindling support, having seen its vote share plummet from four per cent in 2014 to below one per cent in 2019, amidst growing resentment over unfulfilled promises, including denying Special Category Status and stalled infrastructure projects.
Amidst mounting discontent, the electorate's hopes were pinned on Prime Minister Modi's recent address in Chilakaluripet on March 17. However, the PM's lack of concrete assurances prompted criticism from the YSRCP and raised doubts about the efficacy of the renewed alliance. Political pundits emphasise the need for the BJP to emulate strategies deployed in other states, such as Chhattisgarh, where assurances from Union Minister Amit Shah proved pivotal in swaying voter sentiment.
The YSRCP's Advisor for public affairs, Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy, criticized the alliance between the BJP, TDP, and JSP, calling it a "farce." Many people were disappointed by the Prime Minister's speech, which failed to address critical issues. Political experts agreed that the BJP needs to offer assurances to regain support in Andhra Pradesh. They compared this to Union Minister Amit Shah's promise not to privatize NMDC's Nagarnar steel, which helped sway voters in Chhattisgarh.
The BJP's lack of concrete assurances in Andhra Pradesh raises questions about the effectiveness of the alliance and the party's strategy.
