Ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission on March 18 ordered the removal of bureaucrats and officials from various parts of India, including West Bengal's Director General of Police Rajiv Kumar and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Iqbal Chahal.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered the removal of certain key officials in various states ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Home Secretaries in six states - Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand - have been directed to step down. Additionally, the General Administrative Department Secretaries in Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh are also being replaced.
In West Bengal, the Director General of Police (DGP), Rajeev Kumar, has been ordered to be removed from his position. These actions are seen as part of the Election Commission's efforts to ensure fair and smooth conduct of the upcoming elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a cabinet meeting soon after the Election Commission announced the election schedule, emphasizing the need for a '100-Day Action Plan' for the new government.
