Krishna was born in a prison in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva. His evil uncle, King Kamsa, had imprisoned them because of a prophecy that their eighth child would destroy him. When Krishna was born, the prison guards fell asleep, the chains broke, and Vasudeva carried baby Krishna across the raging Yamuna River to Gokul, where he was raised by Yashoda and Nanda.

Little Krishna loved butter! He would steal it from every house in Gokul with his friends. When the villagers complained to Mother Yashoda, she tried to scold him, but his innocent smile melted her heart.

One day, Yashoda saw Krishna eating mud. When she scolded him, he denied it. She asked him to open his mouth, and inside, she saw the entire universe—stars, planets, and galaxies! She realized her little boy was divine.

A poisonous snake named Kaliya lived in the Yamuna River, harming everyone. Krishna jumped into the river, danced on Kaliya’s many hoods, and defeated him. Kaliya begged for mercy, and Krishna forgave him, sending him away.

When Indra (the rain god) sent a terrible storm to punish the villagers for not worshipping him, Krishna lifted the entire Govardhan Hill on his little finger! The villagers took shelter under it for seven days until Indra realized his mistake.

Krishna’s flute had magical music! When he played it, birds, animals, and even rivers would stop to listen. The gopis (cowherd girls) would leave their work to dance with him in the meadows.

A poor old woman once sold fruits in Gokul. Krishna, pretending to be hungry, asked for some. She said, “If you give me something, I’ll give you fruits.” Krishna playfully placed a handful of grains in her basket—and they turned into precious jewels!

Krishna once hid the clothes of the gopis while they were bathing in the river. When they begged him to return them, he taught them a lesson in humility and devotion before giving their clothes back.

Kamsa sent a whirlwind demon, Trinavarta, to kill baby Krishna. The demon lifted Krishna into the sky, but Krishna became so heavy that the demon fell and died!

Krishna and his friends would sneak into houses to steal butter and milk. Once, Yashoda tied him to a heavy mortar (ukhal) as punishment. But little Krishna crawled away, dragging the mortar between two trees—freeing two cursed demigods!
