In a major development for students in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that nine top universities from the United Kingdom (UK) will soon open their campuses here. This decision is set to bring world-class British education closer to home for Indian students.
The announcement came during the recent visit of the UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer. PM Modi stated that this step shows a new energy in the relationship between India and the UK, especially after the recent Free Trade Agreement between the two countries.
PM Modi expressed his happiness about this educational collaboration. He highlighted that the delegation of education leaders who came with PM Starmer was the "largest and most influential" of its kind so far.
"It is a matter of great joy that nine UK universities are now going to establish campuses in India," PM Modi said.
This move is expected to provide Indian students with more opportunities to receive an international-quality education without the high costs of studying abroad. It will also foster greater cultural and academic exchange between the two nations.
First Campus is Already Open in Gurugram
PM Modi shared that the Gurugram campus of the University of Southampton is now operational. The first batch of students has already begun their classes, marking the successful start of this new initiative.
According to the announcement, the following UK universities are planning to open campuses in India:
- University of Liverpool – to be located in Bangalore
- University of York – to be located in Mumbai
- University of Aberdeen – to be located in Mumbai
- University of Bristol – to be located in Mumbai
The names of the remaining universities are expected to be revealed soon.
