7 Samurai Techniques To Control Your Mind

Here are 7 samurai techniques, drawn from Bushido (the “Way of the Warrior”) and Zen philosophy, that you can use to control your mind today.

1. Zanshin (The Remaining Mind)

Cultivating a state of relaxed awareness. It’s a continuous, non-tense state of alertness where you are fully present and aware of your surroundings, your actions, and your internal state, without being fixated on any one thing.

2. Mushin (No-Mind)

Reaching a state of “mind no-mind,” where the mind is free from thoughts of anger, fear, or ego. It is a state of pure action and flow, where the body acts without conscious interference.

3. Fudōshin (Immovable Mind)

Developing an unshakable heart and calm spirit. It is not rigidity or stubbornness, but a state of profound inner stability and composure that cannot be upset by external events.

4. Heijoshin (The Everyday Mind)

Maintaining a balanced and calm mind in all situations, both ordinary and extraordinary. The mind you have while washing dishes should be the same mind you have in a crisis.

5. Kokoro-Gamae (Posture of the Heart)

The conscious cultivation of your inner attitude or intention. Before action, you set the “posture” of your mind, just as you would set the posture of your body.
