Overview

Japan’s unemployment rate unexpectedly rose to 2.8 percent in March 2023 from 2.6 percent in February, above market consensus of 2.5 percent. This was the highest reading since January 2022, as the number of unemployed increased by 150 thousand to 1.95 million, the highest since February 2021; while employment was up by 170 thousand to 67.31 million. The labor force added by 370 thousand to 69.28 million while those detached from the labor force dropped by 340 thousand to 40.77 million. The non-seasonally adjusted labor force participation rate was at 62.6 percent in March, unchanged from the same month the previous year. A year earlier, the unemployment rate was at 2.6 percent. Meanwhile, the jobs-to-applications ratio unexpectedly fell to a seven-month low of 1.32 in March from 1.34 in February.
