A senior official of the Union Ministry of Finance, Navjot Singh (52), lost his life on Sunday after a BMW car allegedly collided with his motorcycle near the Delhi Cantonment metro station on Ring Road.
His wife, who was riding pillion on the motorcycle, was also injured in the accident.
Following the incident, the Delhi Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused. In addition to charges related to the accident, the FIR includes sections on destruction and concealment of evidence.
According to police investigations and official vehicle registration records, the BMW car involved in the accident was driven by a woman named Gagandeep. The car is registered in the name of her husband, Parikshit Kakkar, News18 reported.
The official registration details on the all-India RTO website confirm that Parikshit Kakkar is the legal owner of the BMW, though his wife was behind the wheel at the time of the crash.
According to the report, the BMW hit the motorcycle from behind. The motorcycle was being ridden by Navjot Singh, a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs under the Ministry of Finance, who lived in Hari Nagar. His wife, aged 50, was accompanying him on the motorcycle when the collision occurred.
Immediately after the accident, the BMW occupants, including Gagandeep and her husband, took the injured couple to a hospital nearly 19 to 22 kilometers away from the accident site.
Despite medical intervention, Navjot Singh succumbed to his injuries. His wife is currently undergoing treatment for her injuries. Both the accused and her husband also sustained minor injuries in the accident and were admitted to the same hospital.
The deceased’s son raised concerns about why his parents were taken to a hospital far from the accident site instead of a nearby medical facility. The son also questioned the hospital’s role and alleged negligence in admitting his parents.
Police said that the hospital where the couple was taken is associated with acquaintances of the accused, further raising concerns that this may have been an attempt to tamper with evidence.
Both vehicles involved have been seized, and the statements of the accused are yet to be recorded as part of the ongoing investigation.
