The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Kerala, Karnataka, coastal Maharashtra, and Goa till June 1, with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall over Kerala in the May 27-30 period.
The department has said that a fresh Western Disturbance will likely affect northwest India starting May 29. Meanwhile, conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to move further into more parts of the Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, the north Bay of Bengal, the remaining northeastern states, and some parts of West Bengal and Sikkim in the next two to three days.
The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall in Mizoram on May 28, followed by Assam and Meghalaya on May 29 and 30. Warnings have been issued, asking people to stay alert and take necessary safety steps due to the chance of flooding, landslides, and travel disruptions, Business Today reported.
Delhi will have partly cloudy skies and possible thunderstorms on May 28. Light rain and thunderstorms are likely on May 29 and 30, with maximum temperatures around 38–40 degrees Celsius on May 28–29, dropping to 35–37 degrees Celsius by May 30.
In the eastern and central parts of the country, areas like Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Odisha are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall till May 31. Thunderstorms, lightning, and winds of 40–50 kmph are expected in these areas. Madhya Pradesh and Bihar will also experience similar weather, with western Madhya Pradesh facing strong winds of 50–60 kmph.
In the south, Telangana is set to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on May 28 and 29. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal will see scattered rainfall and occasional thunderstorms till June 2, the Business Today report added. Kerala is expected to receive extremely heavy rain till May 30. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Yanam will also get rain over the next five days.
The northeast, including Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, will see heavy to very heavy rainfall till June 2. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall on May 30.
The IMD also advised fishermen to not venture to the Arabian Sea from May 27 to June 1, and off Kerala, Karnataka, Konkan, Goa, Lakshadweep, Comorin areas, Gulf of Mannar, along and off Gujarat coast on May 30 and 31, Business Today reported.
