A lawyer practising in Gurgaon has been arrested on suspicion of espionage, accused of passing sensitive information to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency, according to a TOI report. The case, which involves scrutinised bank accounts and repeated trips to Amritsar, marks the third such espionage-related arrest in the Mewat region this year.

The individual, identified as Rizwan, was detained by police at his in-laws’ home in Pipaka village, Nuh’s Tauru subdivision, following intelligence provided by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). A subsequent raid on his residence led to the recovery of documents pertinent to the investigation.

Investigators, cited by TOI, are examining Rizwan’s financial activities and cross-border movements. He is reported to have maintained two bank accounts and made several trips to Amritsar, allegedly to collect funds. His travel history to Pakistan and digital transactions are also under the microscope.

Authorities are analysing communications, having recovered messages exchanged with individuals in Pakistan. A significant lead came from another lawyer, Musharraf (also known as Parvez), a friend of Rizwan’s who was previously detained in connection with the case.

Musharraf told police he met Rizwan during a 2022 internship at Sohna court. While Rizwan practised in Gurgaon and Musharraf later worked in Nuh, the two reportedly remained in close professional and social contact.

Rizwan’s family has publicly refuted the accusations. They contend his communications with Pakistan were solely with relatives and insist he was “not part of any anti-national activities.”

This arrest is not an isolated incident but part of a concerning pattern in the Mewat region. Just days before Rizwan’s detention, police arrested 26-year-old Arman from Rajaka village for alleged espionage activities.

Furthermore, in May, authorities arrested Mohammad Tarif, a quack from Kangarka village, on charges of sharing Indian Air Force-related information with Pakistani contacts. Officials have confirmed that investigations into all three cases are ongoing, with a particular focus on following the digital and financial trails.
