As Independence Day approaches, mock security drills at Delhi’s Red Fort have uncovered alarming lapses after a "dummy terrorist" from the Delhi Police Special Cell infiltrated the premises undetected, even reaching the children’s section with imitation explosives.
According to an Hindustan Times report, the operative recorded videos and took selfies during the breach, marking the third such failure in recent drills.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Raja Banthia acknowledged the shortcomings but emphasised the drills’ necessity. “We continue to conduct them to rule out any shortcomings and we have had several successful drills where mock operatives were caught,” he was cited by HT as saying.
Another officer cited multiple successful attempts, including three subversion drills and nine infiltration tests by various units, though the recent failures have raised concerns.
The revelations follow the suspension of seven police personnel on August 5 after a dummy bomb went unnoticed during an earlier drill. The officers, including constables and head constables, were responsible for Red Fort security at the time. “The policemen deployed for the security of the Red Fort could not trace the bomb, due to which they were suspended,” police confirmed.
With Independence Day celebrations set for August 15, Delhi Police have intensified daily drills to fortify security. The Red Fort, where the Prime Minister delivers the national address, remains a high-risk target, making these exercises critical.
