A Class 7 student of Vibgyor Roots and Rise, an international school in Mumbai’s Malad, sustained a spinal injury after classmates gave him ‘birthday bumps’ during school hours. The incident occurred on the child’s birthday, leaving what was meant to be a celebration turning into a serious accident, The Free Press Journal reported.
The parents of the injured boy have alleged negligence by the school and have lodged a complaint with the police. The school's response was unavailable. The boy’s parents claimed that one of the classmates gave the child birthday bumps with such force that it led to a spinal injury. The boy was immediately taken for medical attention, where it was confirmed damage to his spinal cord.
The boy’s parents said they registered a complaint after they received no response from the school administration. However, when the police authorities visited the school, the matter was downplayed and never followed up.
The parents have called on the school to take responsibility both for failing to prevent the accident and for remaining silent afterward. They emphasized the need to strictly regulate traditions like birthday bumps to prevent similar incidents in the future. The parents added that they will wait one week for a response from the school management before deciding on their next steps.
