As Delhi University is set to elect its new president on Friday, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) is expected to claim major seats.
ABVP has taken the lead in three key posts — President (10,362 votes), Secretary (8,353 votes) and Joint Secretary (8,009 votes). Meanwhile, the Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has inched ahead in the Vice-President's post with 11,606 votes. Counting began at 9 am at the Convention Centre in North Campus, with final results expected by evening.
The NSUI has fielded Joslyn Nandita Choudhary, a postgraduate student of Buddhist Studies, and the ABVP has fielded Aryan Maan from the Department of Library Science for the president's post.
Of the 1.53 lakh registered voters, 60,272 students cast their ballots, pushing turnout to 39.36% — up from 35.2% in 2024, though still below the 42% recorded in 2023. A total of 21 candidates are in the fray for the four posts on the central panel.
According to a report by The Times of India, Over the past decade, the Delhi University Students’ Union presidency has largely been dominated by ABVP, the student wing aligned with right-leaning politics and cultural nationalism.
From 2013–14 to 2016–17, ABVP consecutively held the top post with leaders like Aman Awana, Mohit Nagar, Satendra Awana, and Amit Tanwar. Though NSUI managed to break the streak in 2017–18 with Rocky Tuseed (Tushir), ABVP regained control in subsequent years, with presidents including Ankiv Baisoya, Shakti Singh, Akshit Dahiya, and Tushar Dedha, the report added. NSUI’s recent win in 2024–25 with Ronak Khatri marked another rare interruption in ABVP’s long-standing dominance.
