Nine persons, including a six-year-old child, lost their lives, and couple of others were injured after a speeding car rammed into a stationary pickup truck on the Jejuri-Morgaon road in Pune district on Wednesday evening, Deccan Herald reported.
The incident took place in front of Shriram Dhaba, near the Kirloskar Company. According to the report, the car was moving from Jejuri towards Baramati. In a post on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the deaths and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF to the next of kin of each deceased, and Rs 50,000 to the injured persons.

“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to a road accident on the Jejuri-Morgaon road in Pune. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon,” the PM’s post read.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who is the Pune district guardian minister and Baramati MLA, expressed shock over the accident, the report added. “The incident of the death of some people in a horrific accident involving a car and a pickup tempo on the Jejuri-Morgaon road in Pune is very unfortunate and painful. I pay my heartfelt tributes to them. I express my condolences to their families. The injured in this accident are undergoing treatment in the hospital and I pray for their speedy recovery,” he said.
“This incident is very sad and unfortunate. Heartfelt condolences to the citizens who died in this. We all share in the grief that has befallen their families,” Baramati MP Supriya Sule was quoted by Deccan Herald as saying.
After crashing into a pickup vehicle parked on the roadside, the impact of the crash was so severe that the car collided with another vehicle parked nearby.
The deceased were identified as Somnath Ramchandra Wayse and Ramu Sanjivan Yadav, of Nazare in Purandar; Ajaykumar Chavan of Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh; Ajit Ashok Jadhav from Kanjale in Bhor; Kiran Bharat Raut from Pawarwadi in Indapur; Ashwini Santosh Aisar from Nangnapur in Solapur; Akshay Shankar Raut from Zhargadwai in Baramati; Sarthak Kiran Raut, a six-year-old child; and one unidentified person.
According to the report, Kiran, Akshay, and Ashwini were travelling in the car at the time of the incident. Wayse, one of the deceased, was the owner of the hotel in front of which the pickup was parked. He and his staff were unloading a refrigerator from the pick-up vehicle when the accident occurred. “While the fridge was being taken out, a speeding car carrying six people veered off the road and rammed into the pick-up truck,” Tanaji Barade, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Pune Rural, was quoted by Deccan Herald as saying.
