Carbon black is virtually pure elemental carbon in the form of colloidal particles that are produced by incomplete combustion or thermal decomposition of gaseous or liquid hydrocarbons under controlled conditions. It is used in tyres, rubber and plastic products, printing inks and coatings etc. The worldwide production is expected to reach 11 Million Metric tons in 2010 at CAGR of 3.6%. The Asia-Pacific region accounts for 50% of global demand for carbon black, 7% is almost equally divided between America and Europe, whereas demand from Africa and Middle-East is less than 3%. Around 90% of carbon black is used in rubber applications, 9% as a pigment, and the remaining 1% as an essential ingredient in hundreds of diverse applications. Aditya Birla Nuvo, Philips carbon are the listed players in this industry. Cabot India, the subsidiary of global major Cabot Corporation is an unlisted player in the Indian carbon black sector. Philips carbon black is undisputed leader in the domestic industry catering market share of around 45% with a capacity of 2,70,000 MTPA. The other player, Aditya Birla Group is the fourth largest producer globally with effective capacity of 2,30,000 MTPA, spread across four countries – Thailand, Egypt, India and China. However, the company is second largest domestic player behind Philips Carbon and constitutes 36% of market share.  hide
