Panaji, Jun 25 (PTI) Goa government has asked the district administration to furnish details of illegal mining activity, believed to be carried out within the state forests land, which is detrimental to environment. Mines and Geology department director Prasanna Acharya has written a letter to collectors of North Goa and South Goa districts, asking them to prepare a list of lands in forest areas where illegal mining was carried out by the companies. "I am sure there must be several cases wherein attempts might have been done from such illegal operators to get their deeds regularised by paying fees and using such plots fo illegal storage of minerals," the letter says. The mines department which began crackdown on the illegal mining activity had come across a letter by mamlatdar (revenue official) of Sanguem taluka, a region strewn with several mining leases, complaining use of the forest lands for illegal mining. Acharya has asked both the collectors to get information from their subordinates about such illegal use of forest lands by the mining firms. The department has also sought record of how many applications the district administration has received to de-silt the agricultural lands. Manohar Parrikar government has put a ban on desilting of paddy fields in the mining belt as few of the illegal mines were being operated in the guise of cleaning the silt that has washed away from the mining sites to the paddy fields. The state government has decided to auction the ore piled up in these fields and distribute money to farmers. PTI RPS NSK
