Is your website mobile savvy?

Jul 19 2012, 17:48   |   By SME Mentor

Today when we look at sites like Bookmyshow, they have succeeded far beyond expectations because they adopted the mobile concept, and kept the user interface very simple and easy to browse, use and complete transactions. Everyone is on the go for most part of the day and would like to get connected on the move without much ado.

Ted Turner once stated, "To be happy in this world first you need a cell phone." That is the impact the cell phone has in today's world and this is where a mobile website comes into play. Cell phones have been upgraded and now smart phones are so common that soon computers might become a technology of the past. It is time to pay attention to your mobile website in order to take your business to the next level.

Speed

The first and foremost hurdle that needs to be taken into consideration is the speed. A mobile site should ideally load in 5 to 8 seconds, anything more than that needs to be looked into. When you are trying to load your site it is better to check through a cellular network connection as this gives you the best idea of how your site will perform when your customers use.

Design

The mobile network ideally should not be a miniature of your website as the customer will have to go through the hassle of zooming in and so on. Rakesh Raghunathan of PetaWrap says "I did create a site, but most of the traffic and business comes via Social media platforms like Facebook. I am have seen the changes that technology has brought in and do deliberate going mobile. Let's see, only time will tell if i need to go down that road and how it will help boost my business".

It is important that the website avoids flash work or animation as this either takes time to load or fails to load completely.

Content

It should be crisp and to the point and should be able to provide the necessary information in a concise manner.

Contact information

Make sure that the name of your business, the description and contact details are displayed as soon as a customer logs into your site as these are the important information that any customer who logs into a mobile site will be looking at and certain phones have the option of calling the number displayed in an easier manner and this is an advantage which you will cherish.

URL

Usually the URL for a mobile site is different from the regular URL as it will have either an "m" or "mobi" or "mobile" added to it. The search should be designed in such a way that even if the search is with just your business name and if it is done on the mobile the traffic should be directed to the mobile site. Rahul Narvekar of Fashionandyou.com agrees "For us, Mobile is one of the most important business channels. To ensure a faster go to-market, we are adopting BOT model. Also, we shall have our mobile-website first, followed by Apple & Android apps."

Sorav Jain, Founder Echovme, an online marketing company says "If your company website is built on WordPress platform, then you can use the mobile widget, but if it is on another platform, then you should consider making it compatible with smart phones, ipad, and possible mobile web browsers- adding the m ahead of the url making it easy to browse from a hand held device. "

These are easy steps to make your customer happy and to provide them easy information and in the long run it will definitely be a huge advantage to your business.

Its high time that companies have their websites in place to be used by the mobile consumer... Actually not just mobile but companies will have start creating separate platforms for the entire gamut of emerging technology such as tablets, ipads etc.
