Zeroing in on the right office space

Jul 31 2012, 13:24   |   By SME Mentor

Having an idea is where it all begins, but having the right office space is where work kicks off and keeps rolling. It is that important to have a nice comfortable space, plenty of sunlight, good cross ventilation and just the right amount of amenities. It is where you will meet new customers, have meetings with clients, and encourage your employees to work better and where you spend most of the day at.

Budget:

Now that one has found a space that is perfect, it should fit within the allotted budget. "No point looking at all the factors, ignoring the cost. "Entrepreneurs look for a place that is affordable, accessible, appealing and has a good ambiance" says Vincent Sunder Founder of Alabos BPO Solutions.  Start with the budget and then get on with scouring for a suitable place for the office space.

The Location:

Having an office in a location that is easily accessible from anywhere in a city is important. It makes it easy for others to come over in case of meetings. But it is also necessary to have it where one has other services nearby- a bank, a printer, good network coverage and where it is affordable for the entrepreneur.

"Till about a year ago, i was operating from my home, but slowly steadily my company Effort works grew, and i had about 4 employees. This is when we moved to our current office, where my other company NFN was born and operates out of. We are not located in the center of the city, but it is an ideal location since most of us live within few minutes from there. It is also a space that is all ours with not too many offices around," says Narayanan Hariharan Founder of Effect Works and Co-founder of NFN.

The Space:

"We have moved offices quite a few times in the past year, and that was because the area dint suit us and neither did the space. I wanted the office space to be one that made the employees feel at ease and gave out good energy" says Sorav Jain, Founder of Echovme, a digital media marketing company.  The floor space matters, but the overall energy, atmosphere matters more when looking for an office space. Being in an area that is clean, plenty of open spaces, greenery adds to the atmosphere.  "For many who believe in energy, Feng Shui or Vaastu, it is important to have the space with everything just right" adds Rakesh Raghunathan of PetaWrap.

Senthil Nayagam of Railsfactory says "we moved offices when we realised there was an employee sitting in the kitchen of the tiny apartment we were operating out of. Infact that is when we realised we needed a bigger space and were growing"
