    In case of equity shares, these tax rates are applicable to equity shares sold on a recognised stock exchange and where securities transaction tax has been paid.

    Equity oriented funds are those where the investible funds are invested in equity shares in domestic companies to the extent of more than 65% of the total proceeds of such funds. We have assumed that all equity diversified, sector, index and balanced funds qualify as equity oriented funds.

    In case of Debt funds, short term capital gains is taxed as per the slab rates applicable to you. The slab rate used for the above computaion is 30%. These rates exclude the surcharge and eductation cess.

    For Debt funds were long term capital gains tax is applicable, investor has the option of paying tax @ 20% taking into consideration index cost.
