Merck gave away life saving drugs in Japan post world war II and earned respect. Thousands in Japan could be saved due to Merck’s products.

Even today, Merck is one of the most popular drugmakers in Japan. The tradition continues and now the company has decided to donate cervical cancer vaccines to innoculate 1 million women in poor countries. Vioxx did the maximum damage to Merck’s reputation a few years ago but what Merck is doing now is absolutely commendable.

Pfizer found success in anti-AIDS drug Selzentry but Merck is not so lucky with its potential anti-AIDS vaccine. Pfizer could block the doorway for certain AIDS strains from advancing into the tissues and secured a nod from the US FDA for its revolutionary drug Selzentry.

Merck, after a decade’s research on its vaccine admitted that its vaccine has been found to be ineffective in phase two human trials. Some hopes to combat the dreaded virus is again dashed.
