Putin was quoted saying in a report that 'in response to our alleged interference in their election, [the Americans] want to create problems with the presidential election in Russia'
Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a direct attack on the US by stating that it is planning to disrupt the upcoming presidential elections in Russia.
The Russian leader said on Thursday that the US would try to disrupt the 2018 presidential elections in Russia with the help of its influence in the Olympic committee.
Putin was quoted saying in a report by Russia Today that “in response to our alleged interference in their election, [the Americans] want to create problems with the presidential election in Russia”.
According to Putin, the US that has high influence and control over IOC (International Olympic Committee) and other sports bodies may attempt to create a disgruntled atmosphere among sports circles. This, as per Putin, will affect the Winter Olympics that coincide with the elections in Russia.
Though it was not made clear about how troubles in Olympics will impact Russian elections, Putin may have been indirectly indicating that recent actions against Russian athletes by IOC may have a US hand in it.
Russian athletes have found themselves in the middle of a controversy after several of them faced actions including life bans following the findings of the Denis Oswald Commission, that were sanctioned by the IOC to investigate alleged Russian state-sponsored doping.
Cross-country skiers Alexander Legkov and Evgeniy Belov, became the latest Russian athletes to face the action after they were handed a life ban and annulment of 2014 Olympics results earlier this month.
Though the tension between Russia and the US increased with the crisis in Crimea, the allegations that Kremlin had influenced the outcome of 2016 US presidential elections raised the pitch higher.Any attempt by the US to influence the Russian elections, which Putin is expected to win easily, will make the situation even worse.
