Kolkata, Aug 8 (PTI) A two-day platinum jubilee celebration of the West Bengal Assembly will be held from August 13 in the city. Speaker Biman Banerjee said seminars and exhibitions would be held and senior members of the House would be felicitated to mark the event. Governor M K Narayanan and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would be present at the programme. Invitations had been sent to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and Speakers of all states, he said, adding that 12 Speakers have already confirmed their participation. "Unfortunately, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar expressed her inability to attend the programme because of Monsoon session of Parliament," Banerjee said. Eight members who have served eight terms or more would be felicitated on the occasion. Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, former West Bengal Speaker H A Halim and three former Deputy Speakers Bhaktipada Ghosh, Kripasindhu Saha and Kalimuddin Shams would also be felicitated, he said. Chatterjee will inaugurate a seminar on August 13, while Halim would inaugurate another on the following day. An exhibition titled 'Role of Bengal in Freedom Struggle' would also be inaugurated on August 13. The celebrations would end on August 14 with an iftar party followed by a cultural programme, Banerjee added. PTI AKB KK
