Shillong, June 24 (PTI) Over 400 vehicles were stranded because of landslides in eight places on the NH 44 in Meghalaya's Jaintia Hills district. Among the vehicles stranded at Tongseng, Sonapur and Umkiang villages caused by incessant rain in the past 48 hours, were 250 carrying goods and foodgrains to Silchar, Mizoram and Tripura, Khliehriat Civil Sub Division Officer, S C Laloo, told PTI today. Four earth-movers and 40 men of the Public Works Department were clearing the debris with the rain abating and it was hoped that the highway would be open to traffic after 6:00 pm, he said.
