New Delhi, Feb 9 (PTI) With the situation in Maldives threatening to turn for the worse, India fears continued unrest there could provide opportunity to Islamic radicals and foreign elements to fuel further trouble. As it keeps a close watch on the developments in the Indian Ocean island nation, India feels the political parties of the country needed to sort out their issues through discussions rather than agitations, like the one by supporters of former President Mohamed Nasheed. Sources in the government said Maldives, a major hub of global tourism, can ill-afford instability as trouble could provide opportunity for Islamic radicals and foreign elements to interfere. "If trouble continues, it can provide scope to Islamic radicals and foreign elements to exploit the situation," a source said. "The situation is fluid," the source observed while commenting on the developments on a day when arrest warrants were issued against Nasheed after his supporters rampaged through capital Male. Indian goverment is of the view that nothing will be achieved through agitations like the one conducted by supporters of Nasheed who stepped down as President on Tuesday in the wake of widespread protests. India is in touch will all parties of Maldives but has no plans to advise any section in any direction as it wants them to settle their issues among themselves. "India only wants the issues of Maldives to be settled peacefully and democratically," the source said. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had yesterday reached out to new Maldivian President Mohamed Waheed by writing a letter to express full support.
