Trial against Aftab Ansari to start in 2001 arms case

Ahmedabad, Feb 21 (PTI) The mastermind of the 2002 attack on American Center in Kolkata Aftab Ansari was today brought here in connection with a 2001 arms seizure case at Radhanpur in Patna district. The trial in the arms case is to start soon. Ansari was produced before CBI court's additional chief judicial magistrate A Y Dave, for committing the case to the trial court. When the magistrate asked if he needed legal help, Ansari said that he would fight his case himself. Further proceedings in the case were scheduled for March 6, when the trial is likely to start. A huge cache of arms and ammunition was apprehended by police from Radhanpur in October 2001. It included four AK-56 assault rifles, six magazines for AK-56, over 500 live cartridges, and 250 rounds of pistol. Four persons were arrested, put on trial, and were sentenced to 10 years in prison. Ansari, Adam Cheema and Akhtab Ahmed were absconding. Ansari was sentenced to death by the trial court in Kolkata in the American Center attack case, where six policemen were killed. The sentence was confirmed by the Calcutta High Court, his appeal is pending in the Supreme Court which has stayed the death sentence.
