New Delhi, Feb 10 (PTI) Claiming his legal battle on his date of birth was a fight for "honour and dignity", Army Chief Gen V K Singh today told the Supreme Court that there is a "smear campaign" going on against him on the issue. "Please pardon me for saying so but there has been smear campaign going on against me in the media," Gen Singh's advocate U U Lalit told a bench headed by Justice R M Lodha. The counsel further submitted the "idea is not to stick to the office (as Army Chief) and "I (Singh) would go out of office if my date of birth is considered as May 10, 1951. "I am commanding a 13-lakh strong army. Today, as a General, I am looked up that the General is lying," Lalit said. The bench, however, made it clear that bonafide of Gen Singh is not questionable and he is right in approaching the apex court for his grievances. "You are right to come to the court. We do not accept that you are suppressing things," the bench said. PTI AAC RB RKS ABA
