The state government is committed to achieve balanced The state government is committed to achieve balanced regional development in the state and to make it happen, a committee has been appointed under the chairmanship of the eminent economist Dr Vijay Kelkar to suggest ways and means, the governor said. "I am confident that the report of this committee will provide a road map towards balanced regional development," he added. To track the improvements in development from 2011-12, the state government has decided to broaden the base of the Human Development Mission. The government has also decided to implement the programme under this Mission by considering 'Taluka' instead of 'District' as the unit for Human Development, which is being implemented in most backward Talukas of the state. Despite of overall good monsoon in the Kharif season of this year, very low rainfall was recorded during receding monsoon, he said. Efforts have been made to provide employment and drinking water to the local inhabitants and supply of fodder for animals in these areas at highly subsidised rates. The government has sanctioned extensive assistance of Rs 2,000 crore for the farmers growing cotton, soyabean and paddy, who suffered vagaries of nature and market price fluctuations, Sankaranarayanan said. The response to the Mahatma Gandhi Dispute-Free Village Scheme is quite encouraging and in 2011, nearly 4000 villages were declared dispute-free, out of which 271 villages became eligible for the 'Special Peace Award', he informed. On the security preparedness, the governor said the state was providing sophisticated weapons, equipment and communication systems to effectively tackle terrorism and Naxalite activities by way of modernising the police force. A comprehensive project of computerisation on 'Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System' is currently under implementation. (More) PTI VT NSK
