Hyderabad, Feb 9 (PTI) Welcoming the reported cancellation of tenders for the Polavaram irrigation project in coastal Andhra, TRS today demanded that the ambitious project be scrapped. The project needs to be scrapped as it affects tribals of Telangana, TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao claimed here. Hitting out at TDP President N Chandrababu Naidu and other party leaders for alleging that the company which bagged the construction contract was close to him, Rao said he had nothing to do with them. A high-powered committee of the Andhra Pradesh Government, which studied the issue, reportedly recommended cancellation of tenders for the Polavaram project yesterday. The project, situated at Polavaram in West Godavari district, was first conceptualised about 70 years ago and is said to have the potential to bring over four lakh hectares of land to cultivation and generate 1000 MW of hydel power.
