Nagpur district set for ZP, Panchayat Samiti polls tomorrow

Nagpur, Feb 6 (PTI) The stage is all set here for the Panchayat Samiti and Zilla Parishad elections tomorrow with as many as 608 candidates for 118 Panchayat Samiti seats and 316 candidates for 59 Zilla Parishad seats, in the fray. There are 2252 polling centres for about 14,32,032 voters to exercise their franchise. The ruling Congress has field a highest number of 56 candidates for contesting the ZP polls followed by 54 by the BJP. While NCP has fielded 46 candidates and Shiv Sena will be contesting on 39 seats. Other major political parties include BSP 31 and MNS 10 as 60 independents will also be trying their luck. Congress leaders including Chief Minister Prithiraj Chavan and Union Minister for Social Justice Mukul Wasnik led the party campaign while BJP National President Nitin Gadkari himself led the canvassing. His whirlwind campaign by a private helicopter across the district was the only BJP electioneering agenda. The counting of votes of both Panchayat Samiti and Zilla Parishad will be taken up simultaneously along with Municipal Corporation election counting on Feb 17, official sources said.
