HC summons IAS officer, 3 others in MFL contempt case

Chennai, Feb 8 (PTI) Madras High Court today ordered the the appearance of two senior Central Government officials in the Department of Fertilisers and as many of Madras Fertilisers Limited (MFL) in a contempt case against them. A Division Bench, comprising Justices Elipe Dharma Rao and M Venugopal, ordered notice to Sudhir Mittal, Secretary, and Sathish Chandra, Joint Secretary, Department of Fertilizers, MFL's Chairman-cum-Managing Director I Vijayakumar and Paul Prem Kumar, Liaision Officer for SC/STs in MFL directing them to appear before the court. A contempt petition was filed by Jayasankar, General Secretary of MFL SC/ST Employees Welfare Association, Chennai, against the four officials contending that they had violated the Madras High Court order dated February 14, 2012, passing an interim stay on any interviews for promotions in the organisation. Originally, Jayasankar moved the court for restraining the authorities from issuing promotional orders for those interviewed from October 13 to 15, 2011 till the completion of recasting roster in MFL with effect from July 2, 1997. The court had ordered notice and said any promotions made would be subjected to the result of the petition and so status quo shall be maintained. Jayasankar contended that officials had released the promotional orders on November 26, 2011 favouring a few officers, who were to retire in December 2011. When the matter came up for hearing again on February 14, 2012, the court passed an interim stay till the completion of the recasting roster for direct recruitment and promotion in MFL.
