Govt announces international award in memory of Tagore

New Delhi, Nov 9 (PTI) The government has instituted an international award in memory of Rabindranath Tagore with Rs 1 crore as prize money for promotion of values of universal brotherhood. "It was decided that since Tagore, through his writings and other artistic creations, contributed immensely for the promotion of universal brotherhood so the award should be given for the promotion of universal brotherhood," an official release said today. The amount of the award is Rs one crore, the same for Gandhi Peace Prize and Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding, it added. The code of procedure for the award has been worked out by the Union Ministry of Culture and operational details have been finalized. It is to be given annually to individuals, associations, institutions or organizationsfor for promoting values of universal brotherhood and nominations would be drawn globally and will be announced every year on May 7. The first Tagore award would be announced next year on May 7, the day of the concluding ceremony of the commemoration of 150th birth anniversary of Tagore.
