GNLA leader booked under MPDA act

Shillong, Jan 30 (PTI) Jailed militant leader, Champion Sangma, has been booked under Meghalaya Preventive Detention Act (MPDA) today for waging war against the country by heading Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) an organisation deemed as a terror outfit by Centre. Champion was booked by magistrates of two Garo Hills districts, East Garo Hills and West Garo Hills district, his lawyer Sujit Dey told PTI. Under the state Act, a person is detained for a maximum period of three years and the accused can get bail only after an advisory board of the government decides on the matter. While the militant leader has expressed his interest in contesting February 23 elections after securing bail in two out of three cases against him, his lawyer said he would challenge the two orders as per law. The former police officer who deserted the police force to form the banned GNLA, which is active in five Garo Hills districts and parts of South West Khasi Hills district.
