Declaring open one such water purification centre in Thengaithittu near here, he said the Public Health Division of Public Works Department had been operating such centres in three residential localities. Very soon fifteen more centres would be opened and the government was incurring Rs 24 lakhs for one unit of water treatment so that the residents would get pure and hygienically sound water to drink. He said in the wake of the December 26, 2004 tsunami the quality of water particularly in coastal areas had been hit and the government had hit upon the plan of opening treatment centres for supply in cans. Presently the requirement of the people was 74 million litres a day and this was set to go up with increase in population. If residents wanted door delivery, the government would associate the self-help groups and an extra Rs 2 would be collected for it.
