Nagapattinam (TN), Feb 15 (PTI) The 'Danish Tranquebar Association', a Denmark-based organisation engaged in restoring and renovating the ancient monuments at Tarangambadi, the 17th century Danish settlement in the district, celebrated completion of ten years since its formation today. Paul Petersen, Vice-President of Tranquebar Association, said the Association's objective was not only to restore and protect the monuments at Tarangambadi, but also to improve the socio-cultural ties between Denmark and India. Listing the many restoration projects of Danish monuments completed so far, he said efforts are also being made to establish a big archaeological museum in the town. During the 18th century, the coastal town of Tarangambadi became Denmark's chief overseas settlement. The Danes built many monuments in the area, including a fort, churches and bungalows for Danish Governors. However, due to neglect, many of them were in a dilapidated condition until recently. Pained to see poor state of the monuments erected by their forefathers, a voluntary organisation 'Danish Tranquebar Association,' comprising a group of prominent citizens in Denmark came forward to renovate the monuments in 2002. With the support of the Denmark Government and other organisations, they have helped renovate many monuments in the town. Listing out some of the restoration projects completed so far, Petersen said the 400-year old Dansborg Fort was the first monument to be restored. Renovation of the majestic 'Gateway of Tranquebar', erection of coastal protection measures in the aftermath of tsunami, setting up of an Maritime museum comprising the relics collected from this area and renovation of Danish Governor Bungalow are some of the projects completed, he said. Together with the Bestseller Foundation, the Association is now engaged in restoring monuments in Gold Smith street, renovating the Danish Parade ground and improving the basic infrastructure and drinking water facilities, he said. With the assistance of Danish National Museum, Copenhagen and the University of Copenhagen, a research work on the history of Tarangambadi is being carried out, he added. PTI CORR ARP
