T N Bhattacharjee and his two sisters Sujata Bezbarua and Sabita Goswami had filed a writ petition in the Shillong Bench of Gauhati High Court in 2009 alleging that Mahanta had forged his signature to capture 14285 sq ft land in posh Lachumiere area in the city. The High Court had passed an order directing the lower court to complete the proceedings within six months. Stating that the petition against was an attempt to defame him and his family, Mahanta said, "I had held my faith in the judiciary and I am happy today with the court giving me clean chit."
