Bengali film industry changing for better: directors

Kolkata, Nov 24 (PTI) Despite qualitative changes in the contents of Bengali films in recent times it would take at least another five years to dub the changes as permanent and irreversible, popular director Raj Chakraborty said today. "Yes there had been changes. I could see how the audience is flocking to the theatres more and more. This gives us more courage to try new subjects based on more contemporary tales," Chakraborty, the maker of one of the biggest potboilers in Bengali film history at the beginning of his career, said at an interactive session organised by leading Bengali film magazine 'Anandalok'. Chakraborty, whose eagerly awaited thriller Kanamachhi is, revealed his next film 'Praloy Aschhe' is loosely referred to the real life incident of the rape of women at a remote border village in North 24 Parganas district and how a young, fearless crusader got killed for daring to protest the savagery. "The audience is now more attuned to changes. But for non-mass based, niche movies to get more success and acceptance, I believe we need another four-five years. But we have to carry forward our jobs. With films like Bhooter Bhabisyot by Anikda (Anik Dutta) coming up, with a film like Nobelchor having been made by Suman Ghosh which we had all connected with, the momentum has to be carried forward, Chakraborty said. Chakraborty, the recipient of best film director award from the premier film magazine for past four consecutive years, did not receive a nomination this time. MORE PTI SUS AMD AMD
