Panaji, Aug 14 (PTI) A 29-year-old tourist from Maharashtra was today rescued from drowning at Calangute beach in Goa by a private lifeguard, an official said. Deepak Tuke had ventured into the choppy sea along with other revellers and was being drifted away by strong water currents when he was rescued by Madan Halankar, employed with Drishti Special Response Service. "He (Tuke) was enjoying swimming in the knee deep water along with his friends. Duty lifeguard Madan Halankar was continuously whistling and directing them to come out, but they didn't pay any heed to the lifeguard's requests," said the spokesman of the private agency employed by Goa government to guard the beaches. The youth raised an alarm after he got stuck in a rip current and drifted approximately 25-30 meters seaward, following which Halankar ventured into the sea with his rescue tube while a rescue message was relayed over radio, he said. Tuke's vitals were checked and since no abnormalities were found he was allowed to join his group, the spokesman added. PTI RPS NSK
