The Chevrolet Cruze has achieved new standards on the safety front by scoring the highest points in the Euro NCAP test.
The Euro New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) provides realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of cars. The Cruze achieved 16 points in the frontal impact test and 8 points in the side impact test along with a total score of 79 out of 100 points making it the first car ever to get a clear five star rating. This is indeed a feather in the hat for Chevrolet as their earlier car Aveo made headlines by scoring just one star in the Euro NCAP test in 2006. The Chevrolet engineers have since then worked hard and focused on safety that has in turn helped the Cruze get a five star rating.
The Cruze's body frame and structure are built as a single unit along with a new body frame integral appended with finely tuned chassis components which impart sturdiness to the car. The car utilizes high strength steel for the B- pillars and almost 64 percent of it is constructed of the same. It also features aluminum bumpers to further enhance safety. The Cruze also has premium class safety features such as ABS, ESC, traction control, EBD and six airbags as standard.
The Indian version of the Cruze, however, has only ABS and four airbags as standard features. This mid-sized sedan also scored 7.3 out of 8 points in the side pole test which gives an indication of the car's safety in case of a side way collision. The Cruze not only scored well in the adult safety sector but also in the child and pedestrian segment. Wayne Brannon President and managing director of Chevrolet Europe said "We are pleased with Cruze's outstanding safety rating and today's results confirm that Cruze offers benchmark safety". The Cruze equals its rivals the Honda Civic, Skoda Octavia and the Toyota Corolla all of which have featured in top spot of the Euro NCAP. The top three scorers of Euro NCAP with five star rating are the BMW X1, Chevrolet Cruze and the Citroen DS3. The Chevrolet Cruze, Opel Astra and Volkswagen Scirocco also scored the top spot since they have headrests and seats that offer good whiplash protection. The Cruze had previously achieved a five star rating in the Australian NCAP and China NCAP as well. Here is the original press release:
