BMW and Boeing join hands for carbon fibre recycling erdriveBoeing aircraft

Carbon fibre technology, so far a key component of supercars and now some new-age SUVs is an expensive component. Now, BMW is looking to make this technology affordable with a joint venture that they have signed with Boeing for recycling carbon fibre and also for future development. BMW's i3 and i8 concept cars make heavy use of carbon fibre while Boeing's 787 Dreamliner aircraft has got 50 per cent of the same material. Towards the end of its product life cycle, both the companies are looking at reclaiming as much as carbon fibre as they can. Moreover, byproducts from the manufacture of carbon fibre are also being looked to be recycled or used for other purposes.

Herbert Diess, member of the board of BMW AG for development said, Boeing has many years of extensive experience using carbon fiber in the field of aviation, while the BMW Group has earned a significant competitive advantage through its use of special manufacturing methods for series production of carbon fiber parts. Through this cooperation we can merge know-how between our industries in the field of sustainable production solutions."
