BMW tops luxury segment in India.
BMW India has ascended to the numero uno spot in the Indian luxury car segment, having sold 3619 cars in the calendar year 2009, which rates as the highest number of units sold by a luxury car manufacturer in India.

The company has thereby claimed a 40 per cent plus market share in the luxury segment of the Indian automotive market, a dramatic rise from a meagre nine per cent at the end of 2006. In a specific breakdown of its 2009 sales, BMW India sold 1155 units of the 3 Series, 1590 units of the 5 Series, 28 units of the 6 Series, 350 units of the 7 Series, 101 units of the X3, 287 units of the X5, 83 units of the X6 and 25 units of the Z4.
President, BMW India, Peter Kronschnabl said, "We made great strides in implementing our strategy, and this gave us a significant competitive edge that provided us with a clearly formulated vision. Now more than ever, we see that the number one position in the market is not everything. But, the future belongs to India and if you want to benefit from the dynamics of the Indian market later, you need to act today. This is what we did. Our commitment to India was among the strategic decisions that had to be taken right away."
As it was, the automotive industry had faced an uphill task in 2009. But BMW India came to terms with the challenges with new ideas, the commitment to promote new products and by anticipating trends, besides a well planned and executed market entry strategy.The BMW Group set up the BMW India headquarters in Gurgaon in 2007, a central parts warehouse in Mumbai, and a plant Chennai that produces the 3 Series and 5 Series petrol and diesel variants. The plant has a 3000-unit annual capacity.
BMW India has 16 dealerships in India. The 6 Series, 7 Series, X3, X6, Z4 and the Gran Turismo are available in India as CBUs, while the M3 Coupé, M3 Convertible, M5, M6 Coupé, M6 Convertible, X6 M, 6 Series and 7 Series are available on order. Here is what the original press release says:
