Unrest in Kashmir

Defying restrictions imposed by the authorities, a stone-pelting mob on Thursday clashed with security forces in Pulwama district of south Kashmir, resulting in injuries to one person, a police official said.

The mob of a few dozens pelted stones at the security forces who retaliated by using batons and firing tear gas to chase them away in Pulwama town, the official said.

However, more people joined the mob and the number of stone-pelters swelled, prompting the security forces to use pellet guns to restore order, he said.

One Sarosh Ahmad, a resident of Chathpora in Pulwama, was admitted to the district hospital with firearm injury in the leg and pellet injuries, the official said.

The condition of the injured person is stated to be stable, he added.

The authorities had imposed restrictions on assembly of more than four persons at any one place in Pulwama to maintain law and order as the separatists had called a strike to mark the death anniversary of 21 people killed in firing by the Dogra Army on this day in 1931.
