Padman makes Rs 40 crore over opening weekend

If not for the film's unusual theme - based on the real life story of an entrepreneur who made low cost sanitary pads - the collections would have been higher.

With collections picking up over the weekend, Padman brought in some much-needed respite for Bollywood. Having collected just about Rs 10 crore on its opening day, the film had created doubts about whether praises for its social message will convert to money.

But the weekend collection of Rs 40.05 crore raised the spirits and made way for a better week ahead for Akshay Kumar’s Padman.

Collections on Saturday grew by 35 percent, while on Sunday the growth was 20 percent. If not for the film's unusual theme - based on the real life story of an entrepreneur who made low cost sanitary pads - the collections would have been higher.

The film made Rs 13.68 crore on Saturday and the next day had collections worth Rs 16.11 crore.

“Starting on ordinary levels, the momentum over the weekend helped put up a credible total. However the weekdays are crucial for the film,” said Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

The film has done better than Toilet Ek Prem Katha, Akshay's earlier release, over the opening weekend in places like Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru, though for most other places it was less.

The trend of the film, according to Boxofficeindia, is very similar to Airlift. That film had gone from Rs 11.12 crore on day one to Rs 42.50 crore net. Here Padman went from Rs 10 crore to Rs 40.05 crore net. Toilet Ek Prem Katha had a stronger trend because it held more appeal for smaller cities.

On the other hand, Padmaavat had an excellent third Saturday as the film went on to collect approximately Rs 6.25 crore The film now stands at Rs 234 crore and  also started to be screened in some centres of MP though its probably too late to have a real impact but will still bump up the collections a little.

The only other competition that Padman can see is from Neeraj Pandey’s Aiyaary that takes off on February 15. Aiyaary is an action thriller that stars Sidharth Malhotra, Manoj Bajpayee, Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher in lead roles. Belonging to two different genres, the movies are not heading towards a tough clash. However, some healthy competition can definitely be expected at the coming weekend in box office.
