What does Nikhil Arora from Melbourne and Roshan Kalra from New York have in common? Well, both are chefs played by Saif Ali Khan. The only difference being Nikhil in Salaam Namaste had made close to Rs 35 crore way back in 2005 and Roshan in Chef could barely manage to clock Rs 10 crores at the box office by the end of its first week.

The official remake of 2014 American film Chef, Saif Ali Kha’s pre-Diwali release fell flat at the box office in its opening day itself collecting only Rs 1.05 crore.

Critiques appreciated Saif’s work and also the content but the timing and the release date being close to Judwaa 2 played the dampener.

“When a film does exceptionally well at the box office the other releases in the following week or so get affected. Judwaa 2 has already made business worth Rs 120 crore and grabbed all the limelight,” said film trade analyst Atul Mohan.

The audience for Judwaa 2 was not the target for Chef.

“Judwaa 2 is an out-and-out commercial film and there was no clash of audience. Chef was targeted towards a niche audience who just decided not to go to the theatres. There was nothing wrong with the film, the star cast or the acting,” said Tarun Tandon, Managing Director at distribution company Indra Films.

The film’s Hollywood counterpart with Carl Casper (played by Jon Favreau) in the lead role made approximately USD 46 lakh during its 2014 release.
