SC refuses to modify its order on liquor ban near highways

The court while hearing a plea from the Pondicherry government which sought exemption, said that any reprive would set a dangerous precedent.

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to modify its "liquor ban near highways" order. The court while hearing a plea from the Pondicherry government which sought exemption, said that any reprive would set a dangerous precedent. Remember, the apex court had banned the sale of liquor on and within 500 metres of national and state highways across the country. According to the verdict, the licenses of existing shops would not be renewed after March 31.
