WhatsApp to soon roll out UPI payments function; feature spotted in Beta release
According to the website WABetaInfo, the app has rolled out the feature in hidden mode and has termed it, “the immediate bank to bank transfer with UPI"
Messenger app WhatsApp will finally roll out online payment system UPI on its platform soon. The feature had been much anticipated by the 1 billion users of the app and is already available on its beta version 2.17.295 for Android.
According to the website WABetaInfo, the app has rolled out the feature in hidden mode and has termed it, “the immediate bank to bank transfer with UPI”.
UPI is a feature which allows bank-to-bank direct transfer and works on Aadhaar infrastructure. Payments made through UPI will be almost instantaneous.
The newest feature from WhatsApp will not only benefit its 200-million active users in India, but will also give the government's Digital India drive a deeper push into the previous uncharted areas given the extreme popularity the app enjoys with the masses.
Though the feature is revolutionary, WhatsApp is not the first one to incorporate it. WhatsApp’s rivals such as Kavin Mittal-promoted Hike Messenger and Chinese social media app WeChat already support payment services.
Digital payment platforms such as UPI gained prominence since the Modi government demonetised old high-value currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 in November last year, causing a dearth of cash in circulation.Interestingly, India's leading mobile wallet app Paytm, just a few weeks ago announced its decision to introduce a messaging feature on its platform as WhatsApp is introducing payments feature.
