The Sensex is down 481.01 points or 1.75 percent at 27036.67, and the Nifty down 162.10 points or 1.90 percent at 8363.65. About 377 shares have advanced, 2070 shares declined, and 128 shares are unchanged.
BHEL, Axis Bank, Coal India, NTPC and ICICI Bank are top gainers while GAIL, Wipro, Sun Pharma, HDFC and TCS are losers. Bank of Baroda is down 5 percent after it posted disappointing Q1 results.
It's a bitter start to the earnings season, as Infosys slightly wiped the smile off the bourses' face. Despite the Infosys shocker, the market as a whole put on a show of resilience for most of the session.
Bears were on the prowl today, taking away a mighty pie from the market. If we consider BSE 500 stocks, total market cap erosion stood at Rs 1,22,454.47 crore from yesterday.
