Sri Lanka cautiously moved to 37 without loss, in reply to India's first-innings total of 426 all out, at lunch on the second day of the first test at the Motera on Tuesday.
Sri Lankan openers Tillakaratne Dilshan and Tharanga Paranavitana both reached the interval on 18 after seeing out 38 minutes of play following India's dismissal for the addition of 41 runs to their overnight score.
Sri Lanka fast bowler Chanaka Welegedara claimed the prize wicket of Rahul Dravid in the third over of the day to provide the visitors with an early breakthrough.
Former captain Dravid failed to improve on his overnight score of 177 which had helped the hosts recover from 32-4 to finish the first day on 385-6.
Welegedara, playing in a test for the first time in two years, forced Dravid to edge onto the stumps to finish with four for 87 after his three-wicket burst on the opening day had triggered India's early collapse.
Bowlers Harbhajan Singh (22) and Zaheer Khan (12) put on 25 before left-arm spinner Rangana Herath had Zaheer dismissed leg-before wicket.
Spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, whose appearance in the three-match series will be his last overseas test tour, then claimed the wickets of Harbhajan and Ishant Sharma (0) in the same over to finish with three for 97.
