I may get bored of romantic comedies: Imran KhanPublished on Sat, Sep 04, 2010 at 13:00 | Source : CNBC-TV18 Updated at Sat, Sep 04, 2010 at 13:41
You couldn't have missed his passion debut a couple of years ago, 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na'. Since then of course a couple of films didn't do that well but Imran Khan is back on the hit sweep takes with the recently released 'I Hate Luv Storys'. In an exclusive interview with CNBC-TV18's Anuradha Sengupta, Imran talks about being type cast. The audience and I willl get bored if I keep doing the same genre of films, he says. Below is an excerpt from the interview. For more watch the accompanying video. Q: Back on the subtle, as they say? A: Yes, even before the film started shooting I knew that this going to be a decisive one for me. I signed the film after the release of 'Luck' which was the second of two back to back unsuccessful films of mine. When I went into "I Hate Luv Storys" I knew that this was, as I said, going to be decisive for me, a lot was riding on it. I needed to show that I could give a big hit and that was something that I carried with me and I took it very seriously. I put everything that had into the film. Q: Tell me if I am right. When you did 'Luck' and 'Kidnap', the choice of those films are interesting to me because I think you were trying to go against type. A: Yes, you're probably right. Q: Like you wanted to do something fresh, something new with both the films. A: That is true, yes. Q: And then with 'I hate Luv Storys' you are cast to type. So you are this cool, cute, young man who young girls love and it is a love story. So how does that feel? The fact that you tried to do something different, you tried to follow a route and you are back to doing what people want you to do? A: The fact is that I have never really been someone who believes in this concept of having an image or doing films of a certain genre. I think if a film is good, it will work and if a film does not work, that is obviously indicative of the fact that it is not good. So a lot of people say, "So do you think you tried thrillers, you tried action films and the films failed because people don't like to see you that way." Q: Isn't that because you must have done a lot of thinking about what went wrong? A: I don't think any one ever said that these films are great and if another actor had done them they would have worked. Q: So you are saying the films themselves, the merit of the film is what matters in the end? A: I think that is what matters and I think that is what was lacking. I wouldn't say that I regret doing those films, I have learnt a lot from working in both those films, I have learnt a lot from each one of my directors and even from the experience of being a part of a film, putting a lot into it and then seeing it fail, you learn something from that. Q: I remember because you had said to me when you were doing 'Kidnap' you said that you do little things like, there is a lot of internalized violence in your character in 'Kidnap' and it seems you chose not to blink because you were trying to convey all of that. These are things that people don't realize. So a lot of effort goes into it and then when doesn't work and then people like us sit and try and analyze what went wrong. You are saying it's not about casting Imran against type or casting Imran against the kind of thing people seem to want to see him in? A: No I feel that if the films had been better, if we had been able to make better films, people would have liked them fine and suddenly everyone would say, "Wow, look at this guy he can do this amazing range of work.
