Can Kamal Nath deliver on his target of 20 km per day?Published on Sun, Mar 21, 2010 at 12:12 | Source : CNBC-TV18 Updated at Sun, Mar 21, 2010 at 16:35
It is ironical but true that distances in major cities in India are measured in time and not in kilometres. Ask anybody how many kilometres in Nariman Point from Mumbai airport and the typical answer you will get is - it an hours drive. My own belief as to why time replaced kilometre was because measuring distance by kilometre was misleading for instance it takes me nearly an hour to cover the distance of 14 kilometres between my home and office. In reality this distance of 14 kilometres should not take more than 20-25 minutes. Clearly unlike in Europe or US driving in India is not a pleasure and this is because we do not have four lanes have eight lanes roads across the country. In most stretches there are just two lane roads and to make matters worse roads are not well maintained; there are potholes everywhere. All this creates a perfect recipe for endless traffic jam and pollution. Hopefully all this will soon change as roads and highways minister, Kamal Nath is rearing to go. Kamal Nath has set an ambitious target of building 20 kilometres of road per day i.e. approximately 7,000 kilometres every year. This puts India on par with China. Of course he has promised that four-laning and six-laning of existing network will also be done on a war footing. But the big question of the day is - can Kamal Nath deliver? That is the focus of this week's episode on roads and highways. For more please watch the accompanying videos.
