Ajay Maken: Tackling the naxal menace
With over three generations in active politics, Ajay Maken took to it like a fish to water. He has been entrusted today with a much greater role in the government as MoS in the Ministry of Home Affairs under P Chidambaram. On his agenda is fighting the menace of naxalism, one of the toughest challenges facing the UPA government.
With over three generations in active politics, Ajay Maken took to it like a fish to water. From being elected president of Delhi University's student union in 1985 to the first legislative assembly in Delhi in 1993, Maken managed to work his way up fairly quickly.
In 1999, he was appointed the parliamentary secretary to the Delhi Chief Minister. But he shot to fame in 2001 as the Minister of Transport, Power & Tourism in Shiela Dikshit's cabinet. Maken was at the centrestage of action as the CNG crisis and the privatisation of power in Delhi generated heated debate and controversy.
In 2004, against the odds, Maken defeated BJP candidate and sitting cabinet minister Jag Mohan and was appointed the Minister of State for urban development in 2005. But his victory over BJP's Vijay Goel by a thumping margin of 1.87 lakh votes in the 2009 General Elections has been his ultimate litmus test.
Today, Ajay Maken has been entrusted with a much greater role in the government, a berth in cabinet as MoS in the Ministry of Home Affairs under P Chidambaram. On his agenda is fighting the menace of naxalism, one of the toughest challenges facing the UPA government.
