The disqualification of Nawaz Sharif by the Supreme Court in connection with the Panama Papers case means that no civilian Prime Minister of Pakistan has ever completed a full term in the country's 70-year history.
Sharif was less than a year away from completing his tenure. He joins a long list of predecessors, including himself, to have been ousted from office prematurely. Here's a list:
Nawaz Sharif (June 3, 2013 - July 28, 2017)In May 2017, Sharif entered the fifth year of his term. However, within a few weeks a final verdict of the Pakistan Supreme Court asked him to step down from his post on July 28.
Sharif had been elected thrice as the Prime Minister of Pakistan - in 1990, 1993 and 2013. However, he never completed the five-year term in office.
He could not complete a five-year term earlier as President Ghulam Ishaq Khan dissolved his government in April 1993 after allegations of corruption against Sharif, and martial law was imposed in the entire country after his government was deposed in 1999 following a military coup by Pervez Musharraf.
Raja Pervaiz Ashraf (June 22, 2012-March 25, 2013)Ashraf was appointed as the Prime Minister for a stipulated period of a year as the previous Prime Minister was disqualified over contempt of court charges.
Before he was appointed as the PM, he was the minister for water and power from March 2008 to February 2011.
Yousaf Raza Gilani (March 25, 2008-June 19, 2012)Gilani was elected as the 16th Prime Minister of Pakistan. He was disqualified from his seat in the parliament in April 2012 by the Supreme Court for contempt of court.
This forced him to step down from his post before completing his term as a Prime Minister.
Shaukat Aziz (August 20, 2004-November 16, 2007)Aziz left office as his parliamentary term came to end in 2007. He became the only Pakistan Prime Minister who left the office after completion of his parliamentary seat tenure.
Aziz holds Nationality of three countries including United States, United Kingdom and Pakistan.
Shujaat Hussain (June 30-August 20, 2004)Hussain was appointed as a temporary Prime Minister as the previous Prime Minister resigned from his post before the term ended.
Thus, he served as a Prime Minister for the transitional period to accommodate Shaukat Aziz, Pakistan's 15th Prime Minister.
Zafarullah Khan Jamali (November 21, 2002-June 26, 2004)Jamali resigned from his post as a Prime Minister unexpectedly in 2004, leaving the seat unoccupied.
Benazir Bhutto (October 19, 1993-November 5, 1996)Bhutto was elected as the Prime Minister for the second time, however, president Farooq Laghari dismissed her government in 1996 following a coup d'etat in 1995, which she survived.
In 1988, Bhutto became the first woman Prime Minister of Pakistan for an interim period between December 2, 1988 to August 6, 1990.
Muhammad Khan Junejo (March 24, 1985-May 29, 1988)Junejo was elected as the tenth Prime Minister on an Independent ticket, but President Zia-ul-Haq dismissed him after the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution.
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (August 14, 1973-July 5, 1977)Bhutto resigned as the President to become the Prime Minister after the 1973 its Constitution was promulgated. However, his government was deposed in the 1977 coup d'etat.
Ayub Khan (October 24, 1958-October 28, 1958)Khan served as an interim Prime Minister for four days after the 1958 Pakistani coup d'etat. He then, stepped up as the 2nd President of Pakistan after Iskander Mirza.
Pakistan did not have a Prime Minister from 1958 to 1973.
Feroz Khan Noon (December 16, 1957-October 7, 1958)Noon was elected as the seventh Prime Minister of Pakistan after President Mirza dismissed of four of the earlier Prime Ministers. Before being appointed as a Prime Minister, he was Mirza's party chairman.
Noon was dismissed after Maritial Law was declared in 1958.
Ibrahim Ismail Chundrigar (October 17-December 16, 1957)Chundrigar was appointed as the Prime Minister by President Mirza. However, he resigned from his post in just two months.
Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy (September 12, 1956-October 17, 1957)Suhrawardy was deposed in 1957, due to differences with Iskander Mirza.
Chaudhry Muhammad Ali (August 12, 1955-September 12, 1956)Ali who is said to have played a major role in the formation of Pakistan's constitution, resigned from his post due to differences with President.
Muhammad Ali Bogra (April 17, 1953-August 12, 1955)Bogra was also in the list of Prime Ministers who were deposed by President Mirza due to differences.
Khawaja Nazimuddin (October 17, 1951-April 17, 1953)Nazimuddin became the second Prime Minster after Liaquat Khan was assassinated in 1951. However, he had to leave his post as the Governor General Malik Ghulam Muhammad deposed him.
Liaquat Ali Khan (August 15, 1947-October 16, 1951)Liaquat Ali Khan was the first Prime Minister of Pakistan by the Governor General in 1947. He was assassinated in 1951.
